The orc suits were elaborate prosthetics, and the sheer number of extras in those battle scenes lent a weight and chaos that CGI armies sometimes struggle to replicate authentically. The sheer number of different disciplines involved in practical effects – from sculpting and mold-making to pyrotechnics and rigging – is mind-boggling.

Nowadays, it’s really a hybrid approach that dominates. Filmmakers use CGI to augment and enhance practical elements, creating a seamless blend. Think about The Martian. The landscapes of Mars were heavily reliant on CGI, but the rover, Mark Watney’s habitat, and the detailed costumes were all practical builds. This combination allows for both the grand spectacle of digital worlds and the grounded reality of physical sets and props. It’s about finding that sweet spot where the technology serves the story. This approach can be incredibly effective, avoiding the pitfalls of relying too heavily on one method.

However, the over-reliance on CGI can sometimes lead to a feeling of soullessness in modern blockbusters. It’s easier to generate a thousand digital soldiers than to orchestrate a thousand extras, and that often shows. I’ve seen movies where the digital effects, while technically impressive, feel weightless and detached from the actors on screen. It’s a genuine frustration for me, as I crave that tangible connection to the cinematic world. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. CGI offers boundless imaginative potential, while practical effects provide a grounding, tactile reality that can be incredibly powerful. The truly great films often find a way to harness the strengths of both, creating something truly magical. Though, if you ask me, sometimes a well-placed, slightly wobbly miniature can have more charm than a thousand perfectly rendered pixels.
